Director of Music Position Announcement
We’re looking for a passionate musician to step into the salaried, full-time position of music director at St. Luke Lutheran Church in southwest Portland, Oregon. As part of an engaging team, you’ll report to Pastor Patti Welch and Pastor Beth Brashear. You’ll be responsible for inspiring the congregation by making music come alive at St. Luke.
What you’ll do
- Direct a traditional choir and other musical groups.
- Lead music for modern worship.
- Be creative about bringing different kinds of music to people where they are, such as youth and others.
- Work closely with pastors, staff, and volunteers to plan music for a joyful experience which fits into the mission of St. Luke to worship, connect, and serve.
- Set and achieve doable goals that create job satisfaction.
- Work with our other musicians such as pianist, organist, handbells, modern worship musicians, string and brass instrumentalists.
Hoped-for skills
- Enlist the broad range of musical skills at St. Luke, including those that may not read music.
- Encourage cross-generational participation within different programs.
The person we’re looking for
- You want to become part of the St. Luke family of faith.
- You are able to use music to attract, involve and inspire our congregation.
- You’re a music lover and musician with a knack for keyboards, guitar or other instruments, and can sing.
- You’re adaptable to changing worship styles including traditional, contemporary, and world music.
- You look forward to sharing music with teen groups.
- You have a Bachelor’s degree in music and experience with choral conducting; a Master’s degree is a bonus.
- You’re a team player.
- You are a people person who is energized by interacting with a wide spectrum of congregants who vary in their musical abilities and tastes in music.
- You want a work-life balance, and have personal interests that go beyond our walls, such as exploring the beautiful Pacific Northwest.
