What is Confirmation and Who’s involved?

Confirmation Ministry at St. Luke is a family affair. Seventh and eighth grade youth and parents share in a two year journey exploring faith and life together. Parents support their student by participating in Parent Night activities about once a month, an annual youth and parent parallel retreat, and a variety of activities and service projects. We are lead by our pastors and a team of totally awesome small group mentors and Sunday School teachers.
 

When do we meet?

We meet every Wednesday Night from September through May, gathering from 6:00-7:30pm. We start with a half hour of Middle School Youth Group time that includes great food, fun, and fellowship, followed by an hour focused on the topic for the night in a combination of large and small groups. On Sunday morning, we meet from 9:45-10:45am. There’s always lots of fun and lively discussion on Sunday morning—not to mention some good breakfast snacks to get you going!
 

What do you talk about in Confirmation?

Using the Augsburg Fortress, Here I Stand curriculum, guided by our pastors, small group leaders, and Sunday school teachers, our youth explore the Bible and Luther’s Small Catechism and a variety of issues that motivate them to connect the dots between the teachings of faith, their observations of the world, and their life experience.
 

Is it all about study?

No! We like to have fun, so there are lots of activities scheduled where we can hang out, talk, play, or do some cool stuff to make a difference for others. Each year there are at least three retreat weekends—great opportunities to play and build friendships as we grow in our spiritual life. Confirmation is about experiencing the love of God. We do that in lots of ways.
 

Is Serving Our Neighbor part of Confirmation?

Yes! In Confirmation we learn that “Incarnating” means bringing something to life. Bringing the love of God to life through service is another exciting part of Confirmation at St. Luke.
 

What happens when you finish; is there a graduation?

Confirmation Sunday is not a graduation; it is an important step on the journey of faith. In May of their 8th grade year, our youth are invited to make a public Affirmation of Baptism during a worship service. Then they take their place as full members of the body of Christ at St. Luke, and join their peers in the High School Sunday School and Youth Group.
